a murder ballad using only two strings (one on bass, one on guitar)
a purple sunset on the way in tonight
old jimmy jacobson came in for a bite
placed his order and got a good deal
i asked him if he’d like a serve of fries with his meal
“no thanks,” he told me and pulled out a gun
“i’m sick of fries,” he confided to me
“last time i ate them i was in tennessee”
like in a movie he fired from his hip
two shots rang out – ben collapsed on the chips
with two gaping holes in the back of his skull
a lady somewhere gave a terrible shriek
jimmy whirled as if he’d practised all week
her scream turned into something more of a glug
seemed like she was choking on a .38 slug
her daughter beside her got one in the arm
old jimmy grabbed his food and turned to the door
made his way around the blood on the floor
the other patrons avoided his gaze
david took his phone out and got shot in the face
the customers sighed in relief once he’d gone
outside a man wished him a wonderful night
jimmy thanked him and murdered his wife
unwrapped his burger and started to eat
the sunset watched him fall down by the side of the street
choked on the pickle he didn’t take out

“don’t fail the contact” eventually morphed into this, a sweet lil valentine for milady
you make me smile
i’ll be your crocodile
if you be my bee
i’ll make you a cuppa tea

a bit of a blues that i’m not really sure what to do with, so thought i’d just throw it out there as is and think about it more later.
woke up this morning at quarter past nine
rolled over, went back to sleep till lunch time
it’s hard to sing the blues when life is so fine
this afternoon i spent creatively
played guitar till it was time for tea
it’s hard to sing the blues when life is so fine
all my working friends say i should get a job
you’re looking kinda stressed mate so i think not
i like a good eight hours, or ten or twelve
spent the night intelligently
popped a beer and stayed up watching documentaries
it’s hard to sing the blues when life is so fine

second fawm track for 2011, a little punk number.
everywhere we go
people wanna know
will you buy our shit
if we shove it in your face
every time we ride
along the dandy line
the scenery is covered
in giant fucking signs
every time we’re out
putting up some art
last week’s work is gone
but the billboards live on
rattle your can in their corporate faces
take back our public spaces
our eyes are not for sale
bomb their billboards, cover all traces
take back our public spaces
our eyes are not for sale

first track for fawm 2011! in response to the numbers challenge, here’s a little ditty about the square root of minus one.
i will cause you complication
i am an abomination
yes i am my own negation
i will cause you aggravation
literal interpretation
straining your imagination
what is reality anyway

For the 5-second-song-b-side thing on the forum. Written and recorded crappily using builtin laptop mic on Wednesday night, before I had to run off to hospital on Thursday to have a misbehaving appendix removed.

If you were ever looking for a good excuse to keep me away from pianos, here’s one: a long improvised boogie-woogie piano jam made bearable thanks to “enhance timing” in Garageband (set to heavy 16th swing).
